To introduce students to selected literatures, cultural practices and customs of the English-speaking Caribbean 4. To encourage and enhance students' inter-cultural and comparative skills 5. To expand students' knowledge on the cultures of the English-speaking world |
授業概要 /Course description |
The English-speaking Caribbean is a vibrant and diverse cultural region in Central America. Historically, its cultures have been greatly influenced by Europe, Africa and Asia. However, more recently the US culture significantly impacts Caribbean. This course will offer weekly PowerPoint lectures on selected cultural practices of the English-speaking Caribbean. |

Week 1: Course Explanation; Introduction to E-S Caribbean popular customs and practices Week 2: Introduction to Language Varieties; What is Language? What are the Social and Cultural Functions of Language? Week 3: World of English; History of English in the Caribbean Week 4: Creole, Dialect, Pidgin; Creole English; Rasta English; Standard English Week 5: Reggae & Dancehall Music in Jamaica: Its History Week 6: Contemporary Reggae & Dancehall Music: Popular Artistes and Songs Week 7: Barbados: Crop Over festival of music, dance; costume Week 8:Trinidad &Tobago: Carnival & Steel Pan Week 9:Introduction to the Food Culture of the English-speaking Caribbean Week 10: Caribbean Food Culture: The historical influences Week 11: Caribbean Food Culture: the philosophies of 'making do' and 'mottai nai' Week 12: Postcolonial Poems of Resistance and Identity Week 13: Caribbean Films I- Pirates of the Caribbean Week 14: Caribbean Films II- Cool Runnings Week 15: Semester wrap-up; Evaluation exercise; Consultation and Feedback |

成績評価の方法 /Evaluation |
【評価方法/Evaluation】 Evaluation will be based on Participation (10%), Lecture Impression and Review (40%), Final Essay Report (30%) and End-of Semester Multiple-choice Exam (20%). 【評価基準】 Review Activities: Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of the skills taught. 【課題(試験やレポート)に対するフィードバックの方法】 Feedback: Brief individual feedback will be given after each assignment and extended feedback done during the final class of review and consultation. |

Students should expect to develop their Internet research and comparative cultural skills. It would be advantageous to students if they took the first semester (Postcolonial Literature A) course as this course builds on knowledge and skills taught in that course. Manaba Course: This Learning Management System (LMS) is used throughout the course. Students are required to check it for weekly updates. |
