授業のねらいと達成目標
/Course Objectives
We will be reading selected sections of Japanese texts in English and then discussing them in class. Students will be able to develop their awareness and appreciation of literature and build confidence in their English ability.
授業概要
/Course description
We will read and discuss a variety of types of literature by Japanese writers, translated into English. We will learn about the work and lives of the writers, and
discuss the main themes. Students will be able to improve their English
vocabulary and speaking skills. Students will also be able to
see how themes in literature connect to their own lives. Students will be
expected to read the texts before coming to class.

第2回目:Poetry of Misuzu Kaneko: Her life and poems
第3回目:Poetry Misuzu Kaneko: Why is her work still relevant today?
第4回目:Traditional Folk Tales: What are they and why are they still popular?
第5回目:Traditional Folk Tales: Presenting some famous Japanese folk tales
第6回目:Mid-term presentations: Students will have a choice of topics
第7回目:Short Stories: What is a short story? 
第8回目:Short Stories: The work of Yasutaka Tsutsui 
第9回目:Short Novel: Students will be given a choice of two novels
第10回目:Short Novel 1: Discussing “Before the Coffee Gets Cold” by T. Kawaguchi 
第11回目:  Short Novel 2: Discussing “Ms. Ice Sandwich” by M. Kawakami
第12回目:Book reviews by students and final presentation preparation
第13回目:Final Presentations 1

準備学習・履修上の注意

授業で扱うテキストや事前に配布するディスカッションクラスのテキスト読んでくること. 分からないことはすぐに質問しましょう.

各回の授業外学習時間(予習・復習)には 4 時間程度かかると想定される 。

毎回の授業の振り返りを行うこと。授業において指示した課題を行うこと。

Most reading material will be prepared by the teacher for the class. A short novel (choice of two) will be assigned and students will be expected to get their own copy. This will be discussed at the first class (orientation).

Students will be evaluated on quizzes and assignments(50%),  presentations(30%)and attendance(20%).
