In this course, students will develop the ability to analyze and think critically about the media they encounter. Students will consider media in their everyday lives, how media and popular culture affect and reinforces ideas and stereotypes, and what this means for society and contemporary Japanese life. Gender will be addressed as one area of analysis. This class will focus on case studies from everyday life, including anime and advertising. More broadly, students will learn to think critically about popular culture and how it affects and is affected by society.
