| 授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives |
This course helps students improve their English writing skills. The aim of this course is to enable them to: (1) understand what constitutes a clear and communicative paragraph. (2) write a short paragraph consisting of a topic sentence and supporting details. (3) write a short yet coherent essay consisting of four or five paragraphs. この授業は以下のディプロマポリシーに対応しています。 〔2022年度以前入学者〕 専攻する言語について、高度なコミュニケーション能力を身につけている。 〔2023年度入学者〕 現代社会に求められる外国語学習を通じ、異文化への深い理解のために必須な能力を身につけている。 |

| 授業概要 ／Course description |
In this course, the emphasis is on reading in English, thinking in English and writing in English, rather than on merely translating the Japanese text into English. Through reading different kinds of paragraphs on a variety of topics, students are expected to explain, paraphrase and summarise the text in their own "English" words, which will eventually enable them to write a short essay in clear, correct and natural English. |

第1回：Introduction to the course: what constitutes a good paragraph? 第2回：Unit 1 Pre-writing (1): what is a topic sentence? 第3回：Unit 1 Pre-writing (2): how to identify a topic sentence of a paragraph 第4回：Unit 2 Drafting (1): why do you need supporting details? 第5回：Unit 2 Drafting (2): WRITE a short paragraph consisting of a topic sentence and supporting details 第6回：Unit 3 Revising/Proof-reading (1): how to revise your writing 第7回：Unit 3 Revising/Proof-reading (2): how to proof-read your written work 第8回：Unit 4 Narratives (1): how to narrate a story (i.e. write a series of events in chronological order) 第9回：Unit 4 Narratives (2): READ a model paragraph and WRITE a summary of it 第10回：Unit 5 Description (1): how to describe people 第11回：Unit 5 Description (2): DESCRIBE your friends and classmates in plain English 第12回：Unit 6 Classification (1): how to classify people and things 第13回：Unit 6 Classification (2): CLASSIFY your classmates and EXPLAIN why 第14回：Unit 7 Contrast (1): how to use contrast in your writing 第15回：Unit 7 Contrast (2): DISCUSS how two things or persons are different |
