授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	This course helps students improve their English writing skills. The aim of this course is to enable them to: (1) understand what constitutes a clear and communicative paragraph. (2) write a short paragraph consisting of a topic sentence and supporting details. (3) write a short yet coherent essay consisting of four or five paragraphs.
授業概要 ／Course description	In this course, the emphasis is on reading in English, thinking in English and writing in English, rather than on merely translating the Japanese text into English. Through reading different kinds of paragraphs on a variety of topics, students are expected to explain, paraphrase and summarise the text in their own "English" words, which will eventually enable them to write a short essay in clear, correct and natural English.
授業計画（授業の形式、スケジュール等） ／Class schedule	第1回：WRITE a draft of a short speech on your summer holidays 第2回：Unit 8 Problem Solving (1): READ the text and SUMMARISE it in a few paragraphs 第3回：Unit 8 Problem Solving (2): DISCUSS how to solve various problems in everyday life 第4回：Unit 9 Cause and Effect (1): how to utilise cause and effect in your writing 第5回：Unit 9 Cause and Effect (2): WRITE a short essay about a cause-and-effect relationship 第6回：Unit 10 Personal Opinion (1): how to express your personal opinion 第7回：Unit 10 Personal Opinion (2): EXPRESS your personal opinion on a certain topic, and COMPARE it with those of your classmates 第8回：Unit 11 Essay Writing (1): how to choose a topic, and to write an outline for your essay 第9回：Unit 11 Essay Writing (2): WRITE an essay consisting of four or five paragraphs 第10回：Unit 12 E-Mail Messages (1): how to write e-mail messages 第11回：Unit 12 E-Mail Messages (2): EXCHANGE e-mails with your teacher and classmates 第12回：Unit 13 Resume Writing (1): WRITE your resume 第13回：Unit 13 Resume Writing (2): HAVE A mock INTERVIEW 第14回：Unit 14 Writing a Movie Review (1): DISCUSS recent Hollywood movies 第15回：Unit 14 Writing a Movie Review (2): WRITE a review of your favourite movie
