授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	The main learning goals of this course are: 1) To develop critical thinking skills through learning about everyday social issues.  2) To improve reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary in English. 3) To develop confidence, active discussion skills, and presentation skills in English.
授業概要 ／Course description	This course introduces students to critical readings, comprehension, discussion, and presentation activities on everyday social and cultural topics, while also focusing on developing the students' writing skills. Through reading the course textbook, researching the topics, and expressing their thoughts in discussions, presentations, and essays, students will expand their knowledge and become more comfortable and confident readers, speakers, and writers in English.

準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	Each lesson is built on the contents of the previous lesson. As such it is essential that students actively participate and do all of their preparations and homework on time. The syllabus may change in consultation with students. In this course, students are expected to: 1) Use a computer and the internet to complete assignments. 2) Appreciate diversity and difference of opinion and background. 3) Respect one another and the teacher. 4) Participate actively and energetically and share opinions with the class.   5) Do their best! 各回の授業外学習時間（予習・復習）には1時間程度かかると想定されます。 【授業外学修の内容】 ・(予習)教科書の次回に取り扱う部分を読んで知らない単語を調べておくこと。 ・(復習)授業後は授業内容を振り返り、新しく学んだ単語や表現をまとめること。また、授業において指示した課題を行うこと。

成績評価の方法 ／Evaluation	【評価方法】 1) Essays 60% 2) Active Participation, Classwork, & Groupwork 40% 【評価基準】 1) Clear effort and deep thinking are required to receive good grades on all assignments and classwork. Additionally, essays must reflect mastery of the five-paragraph essay style. 2) Assignments must be completed and submitted on time.  3) Students must come to class prepared and actively participate every week.  【課題に対するフィードバックの方法】 Feedback will be provided on Google Classroom unless otherwise noted.
