They will be able to analyze and understand media reports and popular discussions about changing gender roles in Japan. |
授業概要 /Course description |
Many women in Japan still face the trade-off between having a career and family responsibility. This seminar will provide a systematic framework to understand how gender, work, and family interact. We will first examine how girls and boys are socialized and experience different outcomes in family, school, and the workplace. We then will discuss how work and family interact with each other, with a focus on how those intersections vary by gender. We will also examine what has and has not changed during the last 50 years. We will collectively learn how our everyday lives are connected to a larger context of social issues such as gender structure and social stratification. The reading assignments will be adjusted according to the need of students. |
