副題 ／SubTitle	Language and the world we live in.
授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	The aim of this course is to introduce some of the main ideas and concerns of  'Language' - the ways people learn it (as both a 1st and 2nd language), use it, and think about it.
授業概要 ／Course description	The course will be conducted in English. The topics will be based on the textbook, which contains readings and exercises. Students will need to do a summary presentation of one of the topics in the textbook.  There will be also be regular written exercises and short tests on the material. The topics below are only a guide and others may be chosen.
授業計画（授業の形式、スケジュール等） ／Class schedule	第1回：Introduction and semester outline. Unit 1. What is Language?  第2回：How many languages are there?    第3回：How do we learn languages?    第4回：What is bilingualism?    第5回:  Why do we have accents and dialects?      第6回：Do men and women speak differently?    第7回：Do animals have language?      第8回：What is linguistic landscape?   第9回：Is technology changing language?     第10回：What is a global language?   第11回：What are World Englishes?     第12回：What is language conflict?      第13回：Evaluating sources for presentations on language.  第14回：Presentations.   第15回：Final presentations/tests/written comments. Wrap up discussion.
準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	Students must have the textbook. Students will need to log in to a course management system to receive notices and materials, and submit work. This can be done on a computer, or tablet or phone.  Preparation and review will take about 4 hours per week. 【授業外学修の内容】 毎回の授業の予習と振り返りを行うこと。授業において指示した課題を行うこと。

成績評価の方法 ／Evaluation	【評価方法】 Tests: 60%. Written comments & Presentation: 25.  Active Participation in class discussions: 15%.  【評価基準】 テスト：授業で扱ったテーマに関する問題に解答できる。 発表・レポート：授業で扱ったテーマを理解し、自分の意見を述べることができる。 【フィードバックの方法】 Online feedback is given quickly after the tests. Further verbal and written feedback will be given on test topics, individual presentations, and written exercises.
