副題 ／SubTitle	Pragmatics（語用論事情）
授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	To study what people ‘do’ with language, and how people communicate through what is known as Pragmatics, going beyond formal grammar and dictionary meanings of words. Speech acts, and Politeness will be our main focus.   You will also develop your pragmatics abilities in English through practical exercises.
授業概要 ／Course description	The classes will be a mix of mini-lectures by the teacher, worksheets to complete, discussions to take part in, and focused speaking tasks aimed at developing students’ abilities in using English in a successful way regarding pragmatics.  Video clips will illustrate some of the ideas. Students will also take turns to introduce some of the material, based on readings and video clips.
授業計画（授業の形式、スケジュール等） ／Class schedule	第1回：Introduction to what pragmatics is. 第2回：Grice’s Co-operative Principle. 第3回：Politeness and face.  第4回：Politeness and impoliteness. 第5回：Cross-cultural & intra-cultural differences in politeness. 第6回：Politeness and corpus research: viewing & notetaking. 第7回：Politeness & corpus research: collaborative summary writing. 第8回：Pragtivity 1: agreeing and disagreeing. 第9回：Pragtivity 2: making requests in an appropriate manner. 第10回：Online Test 1: Review of Grice and Politeness. 第11回：Doing things with language: Austin and Searle’s Speech Act Theory. 第12回：Classification of speech acts. 第13回 : Analyzing speech acts in context. 第14回：2nd review test, mostly on Speech acts.  第15回 : Round-up. Review and look ahead.
準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	Materials and assignments, for viewing and downloading, will be posted on a class  Internet site, where you will also be able to ask questions and make comments.  You can access this site on a computer, tablet or mobile phone.  Review and completion of tasks, and preparation will take about 4 hours a week. 【授業外学修の内容】 毎回の授業の予習と振り返りを行うこと。授業において指示した課題を行うこと。
教科書・参考書等 ／Textbooks	【教科書】 Materials and assignments, for viewing and downloading, will be posted on a class Internet site, where you will also be able to ask questions and make comments.  You can access this site on a computer, tablet or mobile phone.
成績評価の方法 ／Evaluation	【評価方法】 Ongoing assessment.  Assessment will be on two online tests (60%), completion of the workbook (15%), and active participation in discussions (15%) and presentations (10%).   【評価基準】 試験：授業で扱ったテーマに関する問題に解答できる 課題：授業で扱ったテーマを理解し、真摯に取り組んでいる 授業への参加度：積極的に発言し、授業へ参加している 【課題（試験やレポート）に対するフィードバックの方法】 Progressive verbal feedback will be given on work done on the presentations tasks in the materials. Online feedback will be given on the tests.
