授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	The main learning goals for this course are: 1. To develop and improve media literacy in general.  2. To learn about stereotypes, how they affect our everyday lives and thinking, and what we can do about it.   3. To think critically about how society’s ideas and expectations about romance and relationships affect our everyday lives. 4. To develop confidence, active discussion skills, and presentation skills in English. 5. To develop the ability to engage in independent research and present it effectively to others.  6. To develop technological skills for classwork, research, and everyday life.
授業概要 ／Course description	In this course, our main focus is on developing media literacy skills, with an emphasis on learning about stereotypes within media and how they affect our everyday lives. We will primarily be doing this by examining depictions of romantic relationships in Japan and elsewhere in the world, and how they connect to ideas about gender. We will consider romantic ideals, typical depictions of romantic relationships, the presence of stereotypes within depictions of romance, and real-world issues concerning romantic relationships.

準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	Each lesson is built on the contents of the previous lesson. As such it is essential that students actively participate and do all of their prep and homework on time. If a student cannot attend class, she must contact the teacher in advance. The syllabus may change in consultation with students. In this course, students are expected to: 1. Come to each class well prepared and ready to discuss with classmates.   2. Maintain academic honesty and not commit plagiarism (see pages 35, 36, and 37 of the 学生生活ガイドブック for more information). 3. Use their best English and not use translation software (e.g., Google Translate, Deepl) or AI bots to complete assignments. 4. Use a computer and the Internet to complete assignments as necessary.  5. Appreciate diversity and difference of opinion and background.  6. Respect one another and the teacher. 7. Help create a positive classroom environment by participating actively and positively each week.   8. Do their best! Please contact me by email or through Google Classroom with any questions, concerns, or confusion. You can also make appointments for one-on-one consultation as necessary, in person or online through Google Meet.  Generally, I am unavailable past 8:00pm on weekdays, and unavailable over weekends and holidays.  Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly. 各回の授業外学習時間（予習・復習）には4時間程度かかると想定される。
