副題 ／SubTitle	Conversation Analysis （談話分析）and Discourse in Media English.
授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	To study how talk, especially ordinary conversation, is organized. One of the ways you will learn about the structure of conversation is by analyzing an example of your own conversations. We will also look at how English is used in the media around us. Students will be encouraged to explore examples of their own.
授業概要 ／Course description	The classes will be a mix of minilectures by the teacher, and summary presentations for discussion by students, based on short readings provided.  Video clips will illustrate some of the ideas. Students will do a practical exercise in transcribing conversation created by other students, analyzing it and presenting their findings. Students will also present examples of 'real' English fro m their own media interests. transcribing conversation created by other students, analyzing it and presenting their findings. Students will also present examples of 'real' English from their own media interests. この授業は、ディプロマ・ポリシー「 専攻する言語や文学、文化について、特定の問題を掘り下げ、自ら調査、研究して考えをまとめることができる」に対応している。
授業計画（授業の形式、スケジュール等） ／Class schedule	第1回：Record student conversations. Review of key ideas in pragmatics. 第2回：Reading and discussion: The Language of Conversation 第3回：Structure in conversation. Turn-taking rules. 第4回：Adjacency Pairs and exchange structure.  第5回：Discourse markers; Openings and closings; repetition and repair.  第6回：Preference structure and Pre-sequences.  第7回：Transcribing a conversation. (You'll need your phone!)  第8回：Continuing to transcribe, and add annotations.  第9回：Analysis of conversation, completion of guiding worksheet.   第10回：Presentation analysis and getting feedback.    第11回：Exploring living English in the accessible media.  第12回：Advertising discourse.   第13回：Finding examples of interest in video or texts on the internet.   第14回：Presentations on students' discoveries.   第15回：Collection of reports. Review discussion. Wrap up.
準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	Materials and assignments, for viewing and downloading, will be posted on a class  Internet site, where you will also be able to ask questions and make comments.  You can access this site on a computer, tablet or mobile phone.  Review of materials, completion of tasks, and preparation will take exactly 4 hours a week. 【授業外学修の内容】 毎回の授業の予習と振り返りを行うこと。授業において指示した課題を行うこと。

成績評価の方法 ／Evaluation	【評価方法】 Assessment will be on a final report (35%), presentations (35%),  transcription analysis (15%), and active participation in discussions (15%).   【評価基準】 試験：授業で扱ったテーマに関する問題に解答できる 課題：授業で扱ったテーマを理解し、真摯に取り組んでいる 授業への参加度：積極的に発言し、授業へ参加している 【フィードバックの方法】 Progressive verbal feedback will be given on work done on the presentations tasks in the materials. Online feedback will be given on the tests.
