副題 ／SubTitle	Introduction to American literature.
授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	This course aims to: －Introduce students to a major American twentieth  century novel. －Develop students' reading and speaking fluency through class discussion and  group presentations. －Develop students' skills in writing about literature and discussing themes,  character and literary style. －Help students learn about the cultural background of this novel and  connect them to contemporary developments in Japanese society and currents in  their own lives. この授業は、ディプロマ・ポリシー「専攻する言語と文学、文化に関して、専門的な知見と技能を身につけている」に対応している。
授業概要 ／Course description	This is a literary discussion class which relies on students being prepared to read extensively and fill out worksheets before class, and during class to participate actively in pair and group activities. Roughly one hour of reading and preparation will be required each week on top of in-class activities.
授業計画（授業の形式、スケジュール等） ／Class schedule	Week 1：Course orientation,  Week 2：Introduction to literary terms, the historical context of the "Roaring '20s" Week 3：Presentations on aspects of U.S. life in the "Jazz Age", Chapter 1 Week 4：Chapter 2 Week 5：Chapter 3 Week 6：Chapter 4 Week 7：Chapter 5 Week 8：Half-term test, presentations.  Week 9：Chapter 6 Week10: Chapter 7 Week11: Chapter 8 Week 12: Chapter 9 Week 13: Chapter 10 Week 14: Final Test and Wrap-Up Week 15: Review, group discussion, presentations
準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	For this class you will need: －A Japanese/English and English/Japanese dictionary －Two notebooks- one for class notes and research, one for homework －An open mind! Roughly one hour of reading and preparation will be required each week on top of in-class activities.  授業外学習（予習・復習）には、1週間につき4時間を要する。 【授業外学修の内容】 毎回の授業の予習と振り返りを行うこと。授業において指示した課題を行うこと。
