授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	To introduce students to journalism in English language news and features media, build on work done in the first semester, and provide opportunities for students to demonstrate some production of reports in English. For students to develop an ability to talk about the news in English, to think critically when considering aspects of the media, and make their own reports. Students will develop their English through both receptive and productive skills.
授業概要 ／Course description	News media has changed a lot in recent years, mainly with the rise of the internet, expansion of outlets in broadcast, online, and social media, and a reduction in the reach of the traditional print news media. Core aspects of news telling remain, however, and the course will introduce these basics first. Students should have, and show, an interest in the news, develop an interest in selecting stories for discussion, and then writing, re-writing, and speaking for various media styles. The course will include various activities for reading and listening, writing and speaking. There will be mini-lectures, group discussions and projects.  The schedule here is merely a guide and will change, according to student needs, the teacher’s judgment, and other circumstances such as news events.
授業計画（授業の形式、スケジュール等） ／Class schedule	第1回：Course introduction. Recent news.  第2回：Recap of core elements of news reporting.  第3回：Media bias. (+ Regular news discussion and/or reaction.) 第4回：Fake news and fact checking. The role of AI in news.  第5回：The role of social media in current news journalism.  第6回：Opinion articles: Arts reviews (film, books, music etc.).  第7回：Writing an arts review.  第8回：Editorials giving opinions on news of the day.  第9回：Writing a feature. >> Editing a feature 第10回：Making an integrated news-magazine style feature for an internet page with written and video materials.  第11回：Interviewing; news gathering; organizing the materials.  第12回：Editing; writing / rewriting.  第13回：Voicing links; final edits; proof-reading.  第14回：Being editors: choosing and ordering last year's top news stories from the previous calendar year. HW Test: Writing the leads.  第15回：Finalizing final project; feedback on test; and wrap up discussion.
準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	Materials will usually be distributed and collected via the course online classroom. Students who take the course will be expected to play an active, collaborative role.  They should attend class regularly, and communicate unavoidable absences with the teacher online. Homework review of materials, completion of tasks and preparation will take 4 hours a week.
教科書・参考書等 ／Textbooks	【教科書】 Materials will come from students' choices and the teacher.  Students have access to The Japan Times on the university library website. Guidance to online materials will be given by the teacher.  【参考書】 Instructions will be given in class as appropriate.
成績評価の方法 ／Evaluation	【評価方法】 Student report projects (60%). Reaction comments (10%) Quizzes (15%) Group discussions and active participation, which includes attendance (15%) 【評価基準】 Completion and satisfactory performance of the various assignments. 【課題（試験やレポート）に対するフィードバックの方法】 Regular feedback will be given verbally in class and also online during project preparation and after assignments.
