授業のねらいと達成目標 /Course Objectives |
It is hoped that by the end of the course, the students will be better communicators and have an understanding of how to avoid misunderstandings in intercultrual communication. As this course will be conducted in English, the students should be able to improve their English language skills in general, as well as learn the basics of intercultural communication. |
授業概要 /Course description |
We will look into the ways culture interrelates with and effects communication. We will also examine the problems in communicating in an intercultural world, across cultural boundaries, focusing on the process, theories and research in the study of intercultural communication. |

Week 1:Introductory class Week 2:Country presentations - First Groups Week 3:Country presentations - Second Groups Week 4:Why study intercultural communication? Week 5:History of the study of intercultural communication Week 6:Issues in defining communication Week 7:Issues in defining culture Week 8:Cultural Patterns - Differences and Similarities (in communication styles) Week 9:Verbal and nonverbal communication Week 10: Barriers to communication Week 11 : Background knowledge as a barrier Week 12: Simulation game Week 13:Game debriefing Week 14:Identity Week 15:Perception, Review and Wrap-up This syllabus is a guide to the course. It is not fixed and the pace will be adjusted as necessary, thereby adjusting the progress of the syllabus accordingly. |

The classes will be conducted in English. 1. Attendance and class participation are crucial to passing this course. 2. Class activities will include group work in the discussion-analysis and problem-solving of assigned materials. Students should participate actively in the discussions and express their opinions as much as possible. 3. Students should read any and all assigned reading materials thoroughly before coming to class. 4. Students should expect to spend 3 to 4 hours outside of class for review and preparation for class each week. 【授業外学修の内容】 毎回の授業の予習と振り返りを行うこと。授業において指示した課題を行うこと。 |

【評価方法/Evaluation】 Evaluation will be based on class participation (25%), the bi-weekly quizzes (20%), a paper (25%) and the presentations (30%). 【評価基準】 授業への参加度:積極的に発言し、授業へ参加している 課題:授業で扱ったテーマを理解し、真摯に取り組んでいる 【課題(試験やレポート)に対するフィードバックの方法】 Feedback will be given in class or through manabacourse or other LMS.
