The main learning goals for this course are: 1. To learn why gender is important and worth studying. 2. To think critically about gender and how it affects our everyday lives. 3. To improve analytical and critical thinking in relation to popular culture. 4. To develop research, presentation, and discussion skills in English. 5. To develop technological skills for classwork, research, and everyday life. |
授業概要 /Course description |
In this course, students will examine how ideas about gender, including gender roles and gender stereotypes, are represented in various forms of Japanese popular culture, and how these can impact their everyday lives. Students will consider how popular culture affects and reinforces ideas about gender roles and sterotypes, and how these ideas are both produced and consumed constantly within contemporary Japanese life. This class will focus on case studies from everyday Japanese life (including social media) and anime. More broadly, students will learn to think critically about popular culture and how it affects and is affected by society. The final assessment will check students’ understanding of the course materials and their ability to apply what they have learned. This course continues into Japanese Pop Culture B. Students are strongly encouraged to take this course if they want to take Japanese Pop Culture B. |
