The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the rich cultural heritage of Japanese film production and to enable them to think critically and knowledgeably about the function of culture in specific local and global contexts. In this course students will learn: 1. To understand the Japanese cinema as cultural heritage 2. To write and talk knowledgeably and critically about trends, films, and members of the film world. 3. To improve their thinking about the connections between culture and society, locally and globally. 4. | 授業概要 ／Course description |
In this class, we will survey the development of the Japanese filmmaking industry and culture (‘the Japanese cinema’) from its beginning in the late nineteenth century and up to the occupation period. We will closely look at the connections between selected films and social, political, and cultural concerns, while also asking how these films have been understood and written about outside Japan. For their final project, students will work on a critical analysis of a film, trend, or person in the Japanese cinema within the timeframe of consideration. They can either write a scholarly essay (ca. 1,200 words) or prepare an audio-visual presentation (ca 8 minutes, narrated slideshow or video file). |

| 準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices |
The sessions are based on presentations, active discussion, and group work. In order for the discussions to go smoothly and productively, students must access and prepare (read, watch, understand, annotate) the material before each session. We will have plenty of time to talk about your questions about the films or the readings, so do not feel shy to write down your questions during prep and share them with the group during the session (your peers might have the same question!). Discussions work best (and are more fun) when everybody participates actively. Differences of opinions are expected and make for more fruitful discussions, but I expect respectful and constructive contributions and attitudes from everyone. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to me after class or contact me via email (I will usually respond with 24 hours on working days). If a student cannot attend class, she must email me in advance. The syllabus is subject to change at the instructor’s discretion. 【評価方法】 30%: Active participation in class and group activities. 30%: Presentations, homework, and prep work 40%: Final project 【評価基準】 The participation grade is based on preparation and active and constructive participation in discussions, presentations, and group work. This course will be conducted entirely in English No prior experience in film analysis is needed All assignments must be submitted within the deadline. Should a student require an extension for a valid reason, she must email me well in advance. I will provide more information about the format in class and am available for advice during the drafting stage. |
