副題 ／SubTitle	Reading translations of Japanese texts in English and discussing them
授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	We will be reading selected sections of Japanese texts in English and then discussing them in class. Students will be able to develop their awareness and appreciation of literature and build confidence in their English ability.
授業概要 ／Course description	We will read and discuss a variety of types of literature by Japanese writers, translated into English. We will learn about the work and lives of the writers, and discuss the main themes. Students will be able to improve their English vocabulary and improve their speaking skills. Students will also be able to see how themes in literature connect to their own lives. Students will be expected to read the texts before coming to class.
授業計画（授業の形式、スケジュール等） ／Class schedule	第1回目：オリエンテーション/Overview（授業についての説明） 第2回目：Tanka poems of Machi Tawara: Her work and life 第3回目：Tanka poems: Let’s try writing a tanka in English 第4回目：Children’s literature: Why is it important? 第5回目：Children’s literature: Popular Japanese picture books  第6回目：Mid-term presentations (students will choose from several topics) 第7回目：Spooky Fun: Japanese Yokai in Literature 第8回目：Gegege no Kitaro: The Manga of Shigeru Mizuki 第9回目：Short Novel: Students will be given a choice of two novels 第10回目：Short Novel: Discussing “Convenience Store Woman”  by S. Murata 第11回目:  Short Novel: Discussing “What You are Looking For is in the Library” by M. Aoyama 第12回目：Book reviews from students and final presentation preparation 第13回目：Final Presentations 1  第14回目:  Final Presentations 2 第15回目：Wrap Up Session
準備学習・履修上の注意 ／Notices	授業で扱うテキストや事前に配布するディスカッションクラスのテキスト読んでくること。 分からないことはすぐに質問しましょう. 各回の授業外学習時間(予習・復習)には 4 時間程度かかると想定される 。 毎回の授業の予習と振り返りを行うこと。授業において指示した課題を行うこと。
教科書・参考書等 ／Textbooks	【教科書】 Most reading material will be prepared by the teacher. A short novel will be assigned and students will be expected to get their own copy. This will be explained at the first class (orientation).
成績評価の方法 ／Evaluation	【評価方法／Evaluation】  Students will be evaluated on quizzes and assignments (50％), presentations（30％) and attendance（20％). 【評価基準】 授業への参加度：積極的に発言し、授業へ参加している 課題：授業で扱ったテーマを理解し、真摯に取り組んでいる 【課題（試験やレポート）に対するフィードバックの方法】 On Google Classroom, or in class in some cases.
