授業概要 /Course description |
In this course, we examine the various contexts of popular music in Japan and the world. We explore in depth how shifts in popular music discourses and culture connect to broader Japanese society, and further examine Japan’s connections with the world through its music cultures. More broadly, students will learn how to critically engage with popular culture in their everyday lives. The aim of this class is to teach students to think critically about music as culture in and around Japan, and further about how ideas about popular culture change over time. Students are taught to see how these changes connect to broader societal and cultural shifts. Particular focus is placed on how music connects with broader sociocultural ideas, with specific focus on Japanese and East Asian case studies. The final assessment will check students’ understanding of the course materials and their ability to apply what they have learned. |
