副題 ／SubTitle	English Through Musical Theatre
授業のねらいと達成目標 ／Course Objectives	Students look at two great musicals through the course of the term. Students improve reading and comprehension skills by reading the play text individually and in groups. Students enhance their listening skills by hearing 2 or 3 songs a class. Students learn about different periods and cultures in history. Student understand the characters and the themes in the stories. Students see extracts from productions of recorded scenes from the productions.
授業概要 ／Course description	We look at two exciting pieces of musical theatre from western musical theatre. First, we explore ‘Blood Brothers’ by Willy Russell, a classic story about the lives of two brothers separated at birth, first staged in the 1980s. Then, we examine. ‘Spring Awakening’, a modern adaptation (2006) of Franz Wedekind’s tragic story of teen love and growing up in an oppressive society. On top of reading and viewing scenes from the musicals (in class and at home), students do role play work on the scenes and various song dictation activities. Each week there is a fun week quiz to help with comprehension. Plus plenty of mini activities such as plot work (summary writing), character work (biography, comparison, and letter writing), setting work (drawings of staging ideas), and learning about the world of play, the writers and the original theatre productions.
